both newsfeed and chat do not use meta tags like og image
i have tested on the demo site with hundreds of different site urls
with and without og and twitter cards
newsfeed and chat completely ignore these tags and grabs stupid images from the pages
most of the times its the page background image like a big white tile

try this link
http://sydneylivingmuseums.com.au/exhibitions/toys
view page source and see its got all the right meta tags
in newsfeed and chat you get the white tile background image

you should get this image

both newsfeed and chat use oembed 3rd party feature, which grabs the first image it sees on the page.

in case of the newsfeed you can choose the image to share by hovering over the image you'll see "change image" button and you can choose the image which is going to be associated with the shared link, but this can't be done in case of the chat, it grabs the first image.

oembed 3rd party feature does not work on any site link i tested hundreds of sites links and not one did it get the right image

very easy to make them use the og tags as just about evey website uses them

oembed 3rd party feature is not to bad in newsfeeds as like you say you can chose from a list images but chat grabs stupid images

they both need to use og tags if available if not fall back to
oembed 3rd party feature

this will also fix the post a link from your site problem

what happens when the same page is shared in chat

show me at least one webpage when there's no any design element or no images at all, just plain text. I could not find such.

when you share this link in chat: http://sydneylivingmuseums.com.au/exhibitions/toys it grabs the first images it sees on the page, in case of this link it some white background image 1px x 1px

we use oembed 3rd party feature and this is how it works.

Tammy, on my hand, I'm explaining to you how things work by default and why.

You, on your side are free to change that as this is open source software, you can hire a programmer to change that behavior or you can do that on your own if you brushed up you programming skills.

If you don't have opportunity to do that, you can post a suggestion on uservoice or make a post in the custom code modification section of the forum to get assistance from other community members as we do not provide assistance with custom code modification.

ALSO, please watch your language and be polite while posting on the forum

Again, let me repeat if you don't like how things works, you're free to change that, we can't satisfy the needs of every individual project up there on the web, which is why it is open source

its got nothing to do with individual project
how many times has this been bought up as a problem by others

its about making oxwall work like every other script
making oxwall work like every other website
its about making oxwall better

but like everythink posted here gets the same answer
you would not believe the amount of people here that are sick and tired of posting problems here and have give up because they get the same answer

i have done lots of testing on this
 oembed 3rd party feature
posting outside urls in newsfeed gets right image 50% of the time
of the time as you can sometimes chose the right image
on posting inside urls in newsfeed gets right image    0% of the time

on posting outside urls in chat gets right image    10% of the time

on posting inside urls in chat gets right image    0% of the time

so how you can sit there and say it works has got me stuffed

Newsfeed oembed feature has an option to choose the image you want to be displayed for the link.

As to the chat oembed feature - it does not have such option, but we find it as a reasonable suggestion - let user to choose the image as well, and we passed it to the devs. It will be added in one of the upcoming releases.

cool that will make outside link 50% in both chat and newsfeed
but inside urls will still be 0 %

that fix will make it overall work 25%

A simple fix of making it only use images by size

So in admin can set size not to grab images under 400px x 400 px

Would take 15 minutes to implement

And would make it work around 50%

The size will need to be able to be set in admin so can set it to work on internal urls for depending on your icon and smileys etc sizes

Reading the ombeded webpage it has this feature of adding sozes and of adding thing like to oxwall for it to be able to do internal links right

And how add video

And allowed resorces so it can do internal video embed

So oxwall is only use 10% of what the ombeded api can do
